Nine confirmed cases of listeriosis have been reported in Ontario, linked to recalled Silk and Great Value plant-based refrigerated beverages. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced the recall due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. Dr. Kieran Moore, Ontario’s chief medical officer of health, reported five hospitalizations related to this outbreak.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious illness with symptoms like vomiting, nausea, cramps, severe headache, constipation, or fever. In severe cases, it can lead to meningitis and blood infections, particularly in newborns and older adults. Stores across Canada have been instructed to stop selling, serving, or distributing 15 specific products from the Silk and Great Value brands. Consumers are advised not to consume or use these products if they have them.

Recalled Products (all in 1.89-litre packages with best-before dates up to and including Oct. 4, 2024):

  • Great Value Almond Beverage Unsweetened Original
  • Great Value Almond Beverage Original
  • Great Value Almond Beverage Vanilla
  • Silk Almond and Coconut Unsweetened
