A 31-year-old man has been sentenced to an additional nine years in prison following an incident in Markham where police officers were shot at.

The situation unfolded when officers attempted to deal with the suspect, leading to an exchange of gunfire. During the confrontation, the man fired at police, and officers responded by shooting him. He survived the incident and was taken into custody.

In court, he was convicted of multiple serious charges related to the shooting and illegal firearm use. The judge imposed the extra prison time to reflect the severity of the crime and the risk posed to law enforcement and the public.

This new sentence will be served on top of time he is already required to spend in custody.
